EAGLES SCORE HUGE ROAD WIN

THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2012 – If Bob Cole of “Hockey Night in Canada” broadcast fame was in attendance, we would probably hear the following holler – “WOW”!
If Peter Maher of the “Calgary Flames” broadcast fame was in attendance, the airwaves would almost certainly be filled with the following scream - “YA BABY”!
If you are a Canmore Eagle’s fan, both iconic expressions could easily be used to describe last night’s nail-biting Canmore Eagle’s 4-3 road victory over the home-town Calgary Canucks in Alberta Junior Hockey League action at the Max Bell Arena.
The Eagles, who were winless in their previous eight AJHL games and quickly slipping out of playoff contention in the Southern Division standings, came out flying with four unanswered goals in the first 14 minutes of the first-period and hung on just long enough to register their fourth road win in 25 attempts this season.
With the victory, Canmore now moves two points ahead of the Drumheller Dragons in the battle for the seventh and last playoff position in the AJHL Southern Division standings. They also now trail the sixth-place Canucks by just four points.
For the Eagles, it was truly a gutty performance as the injury-depleted club hit the ice minus the services of captain Davis Claffey (flu), Ciaron Driscoll (shoulder), Jeremy Gordon (ankle), Paul Lamouriex (shoulder) and Keegan Thompson (foot).
“It was a game we absolutely had to have,” said a relieved Eagle head coach and general manager Andrew Milne. “We had to call up three affiliate players (Brayden Point, John Edwardh & Brandon Hodge) just to fill out our lineup, so it was certainly a huge challenge for us coming into the game. We know we have a very difficult closing schedule going forward, so we have to take advantage of every possible opportunity to get points in the standings. The new guys really helped us out tonight, but everybody who dressed for us stepped up and gave it everything they had. It was a great team effort and certainly gives us some badly needed confidence going forward.”
With just 10 games remaining on their AJHL schedule, including a road trip to Fort McMurray this Saturday and three more games against the first-place Brooks Bandits, last night’s victory was almost essential if the Eagles hope to qualify for post season play.
Canmore native Simon Philp was named the Eagles’ ”Star of the Game” as he registered two goals and one assist. Philps, who has been out of the Eagle’s lineup since mid-December with a strained groin, also had an assist in his first game back against Brooks earlier this week.
Eagle starting goaltender Cameron Barnes could also have been named “Star of the Game” as the 18-year picked up his first ever AJHL road victory and continually bailed his team out from numerous defensive giveaways. Barnes stopped 21 of the 24 shots directed his way.
Braeden Music, with his second goal of the season and Steven Phee (his 11th) had the other Canmore goals. Newcomer Wyat Haustein, who came to Canmore from Fort McMurray at the trade deadline, picked up two assists, as did call-up Brayden Point.
The Eagles current three-game road trip continues with a game in Fort McMurray on Saturday (Jan. 28) and winds up in Calgary next Wednesday (Feb. 1) against the Mustangs.
NOTEBOOK: The Eagles next home game is set for Friday, February 3 when the Olds Grizzlys pay a visit to the Canmore Recreational Centre. With the sponsorship of Silvertip Resort and Canmore Minor Hockey, the Feb. 3rd home game is being billed as “Pack The Rink” night. All fans will be treated to a free pre-game BBQ from 6-6:45 pm and everyone in attendance will also receive a complimentary “one-hour driving range” certificate for use this summer. The game will also feature many special in-game giveaways from Silvertip. . . The Canmore Recreation Centre holds 675 people. . . Top attendance this year at a Canmore Eagle home game was 492 against Lloydminster on Jan. 7. . . If you come to one game this year – make it this one and help cheer the Eagles to a playoff spot.
